Community Agencies that Manage Public Health Pests

When a pest is capable of spreading human disease(s) or otherwise impacting human health, controlling that pest becomes a community concern. In many communities there are agencies that monitor and control public health pests called vector control agencies. Vector control agencies monitor pests such as mosquitoes that can transmit, or "vector" diseases like West Nile Virus to humans. These agencies try to balance the risk of human disease against the risks associated with pest control. Some communities also monitor and control ticks that vector Lyme Disease. In some cities, the community vector control program also deals with rodents.

Some communities have organized vector control programs; some do not. We have attempted to list all of the vector control organizations in the United States below. Select your state to browse a list of vector control agencies in your area. You should contact your local agency if you need information regarding:

• Which pesticides are used in your community to manage mosquitoes?
• What is the spray schedule for mosquitoes this season?
• What types of diseases do ticks spread in my community?
• Would my local vector control agency help with rodent problems?
• Can I get on a list to be notified when you plan to spray my street?
